The prologue

The village of Froststead at night under the aurora, its windows lit and the hearth at the centre.

Froststead was a light among the mountains.

A survival and village-building game in the ice, played solo on iOS and Android.

Behind the mountains the storm clouds advance and cover the aurora; below, the lights of the village.

But every light calls the night.

Day and night set the rhythm of the game. By day you work; by night the raids come.

The storm over the village: the banner torn away by the wind, the windows going dark.

Then came the Great Night, and every home went dark.

Bring the hearth to level ten and the Great Night returns: three waves, until dawn.

The hero escapes under collapsing beams; his coat stays caught behind.
At dawn the hero, in his shirt, kneels among the ruins beside an ember that has just come alive.

At dawn, only you remained. You, and one ember.

Every village starts like this: among the ruins, with a backpack, an axe and an ember to rekindle.

Paw prints in the fresh snow, leading away towards the forest.

Your faithful friend is lost in the snow, and waiting for you.

A dog or a cat to find. The dog can come with you and warns you when something is coming; the cat does as it pleases. Neither of them ever dies.

Beyond the mountains at dawn, columns of smoke and the small fires of other villages in the valleys.

Beyond the mountains, other fires still burn.

Beyond the valley lie inhabited villages, markets and missions. The roads cross rivers and bivouacs, and they are not safe: there are bandits.

The hero crosses the ruins towards the stone ring of the hearth, among the logs of the fallen palisade.

Rekindle the hearth. Raise the walls before dark.

Chop wood, hunt, cook and sell. Build stations, quarters and towers; you place the traps and barricades yourself.

The hero beside the cold hearth as the night gathers over the mountains.

And when the Great Night returns… hold until dawn.

If the hearth falls, the raiders take what they can carry and the village remains: you rebuild it in the same world. Only a Hardcore village ends forever.

A day in Froststead.

  1. Day
  2. Dusk
  3. Night
Illustration of the village by day: the protagonist splits a log beside the hearth in front of the cabin, villagers at the bazaar table and the grill, a palisade with its gate, snowy firs, a watchtower and mountains behind.

Day.

Chop wood, hunt, cook on the grill and sell at the bazaar. The village grows by your hands, one log at a time.

The same view at dusk: amber and rose sky, long blue shadows on the snow, windows and lanterns lit.

Dusk.

The light turns amber. Head back before dark, reinforce the walls and get the harvest to safety.

The same view at night: cobalt sky with the aurora, blue snow, the hearth, the gate torches and the windows as the only warm lights, three wolves at the edge of the forest.

Night.

The packs come out of the forest. Three minutes in the dark with your axe in hand: if the hearth still burns at dawn, the village is safe.

No timers run while you are away: the world only moves when you play.

I wanted to play the game from the ad. So I started building it.

A character in the snow. Resources to gather, food to cook, customers to serve and a camp to grow. That ad made me want to play. The experience I found was different from the one I was looking for. FROSTSTEAD grew out of that wish: to bring to life the little world I wanted to get lost in.

Good to know.

What kind of game is FROSTSTEAD?

An independent survival and building game set in a snowy world. By day you chop wood, hunt, cook and sell to grow the village; by night you defend the hearth from the packs. If it falls, you rebuild in the same world.

Where can I play?

Requests for the iOS and Android beta are open on this site. You can request access and verify your email; an invitation may follow only if you are selected and testing becomes available. The game is not yet publicly downloadable.

Is FROSTSTEAD a solo game?

Yes. Every village is yours: no other players, and nothing starts while you are away.

Can I play offline?

A run you have already downloaded can continue offline. You need Internet to create or manage villages and sync saves. Simulation runs on your device; the world does not progress while you are away.

Are the images from the game?

No: they are illustrations, not game captures. The prologue frames come from the film that opens the game; the three views of the village and the two closing scenes are painted in the same style. The game’s graphics and interface are still in development.
